Max Lambert (Gabin) an aging infamous robber is serving twenty years of incarceration in France's toughest jail for a quite hefty heist. Inside he befriends Pierre (Brialy) a notorious escape artist. Max shares with him the hiding place of the fifty million dollars in pure gold that was never recovered by police - it's buried in a church just outside Rome. Together they plan an escape dressed as a bishop and his assisting priest.
